County Cricket rollout
The next generation of stars starts here! Cricket Kenya rolls out mini-cricket across County schools.
Cricket Kenya decentralized its operations across 19 approved county associations, including existing clubs in hubs like Nairobi, Nakuru, and Mombasa. These regional County Cricket Associations are now responsible for managing local cricket activities, grassroots development, and electoral processes
Grassroots Rise of Cricket in Kenyan Schools
The introduction of cricket into Kenyan schools has evolved from a niche, colonial-era activity into a structured, nationwide development program aimed at restoring Kenya’s international cricketing glory. While cricket has been played in elite, mainly private schools for decades, recent initiatives driven by Cricket Kenya and organizations like the East Africa Character Development Trust (EACDT) have focused on spreading the game to public and community schools. A landmark development occurred in early 2026, when the Ministry of Education officially recognized cricket in the secondary school games roster, allowing it to move beyond regional centers in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Nakuru to over 23 counties.
Cricket coaching in Kenya is currently undergoing a revitalization, shifting from localized efforts in Nairobi to a structured, nationwide development program. Under the leadership of Cricket Kenya, coaching initiatives have expanded into over 25 schools in counties like Kisumu and Makueni, aiming to decentralize the sport from its traditional hubs. Private institutions like the Obuya Cricket Academy and Vardhan Cricket Academy play a critical role by offering high-performance training and hosting ICC-certified Level 1 and Level 2 coaching courses to professionalize the local talent pool. Furthermore, organizations such as the East African Character Development Trust (EACDT) use cricket as a tool for social impact, integrating “character education” into coaching sessions for thousands of children in underprivileged areas. This multi-layered approach—combining professional certification, grassroots school programs, and charitable outreach
